Gem Quality kyanite is often mistaken for good quality blue sapphire, but the major difference between the two is the durability of kyanite. It is a much softer stone and is prone to wear if used as a ring stone. It is an aluminium silicate, the same chemical combination as andalusite, but again it is a very different stone.
